Tara Smith's current body of work explores the legacy of abstraction through landscape painting with its potential for suggestibility and ambiguity. The shift between the recognizable and a space of unintelligible territory become metaphors for perception and its camouflage. Simultaneously a sense of dystopic loss and then a retrieval of a semblance of order become visible through the layered and scraped paint.

Smith is working with the implicit difficulties within perception of space, as territories become suspect, our landscapes and references constantly are distorted by different political and social geographies that challenge our relationship to our environment, creating a feeling of expulsion and evacuation from our own understanding of meaning and belonging.
